Miami Vacations: It's Not Just About the Beach

Miami Vacations: if you think the city is just about beaches and bikinis, you're missing a lot.

One travel guide describes South Florida as "Alice in Sweaty Wonderland" – somehow separated from the real world. It also describes it as the most Latin city north of Mexico – a place where a vibrant gay scene co-exists with Redneck America and the children of Jewish Holocaust survivors work together with Caribbean immigrants to keep the city running.

Art plays a major role in the life of Miami and no trip to the city is complete without taking in a little of the art scene. Miami's best art museum is the Bass Museum of Art on Park Avenue in South Beach. The building itself is an interesting mix of the historic and futuristic. The collection inside the Bass includes Renaissance paintings and European religious works from the 16th-century. If you want something more contemporary, visit Little Havana's Art District. The small studios and galleries there embody the best of the city's Latin art.

Miami has dozens of other attractions. EspaƱola Way with its European cafes and restaurants is worth a visit. Of you can tour the Cape Florida Lighthouse. There's much more.

Or you can simply sit on the beach…
